Makes wonderful gifts for the holidays!
Guess what everyone? We have our first guest to our Virtual Holiday Dessert Party, Nettie! She emailed me her wonderful recipe for making homemade donuts. She and I think alike about these little treats! It's really easy to make your own than buying them. Check out her recipe and thank you Nettie for sharing with us!
from Nettie: "I started using this recipe more than 50 yrs ago in a high school cooking class. They are basic but over the years, I've added topping as I desired. Make great gifts anytime. "
Ingredients:
4 c. all-purpose flour
1 tbsp. baking powder
1 tsp. white salt
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp. baking soda
1/2 tsp. nutmeg
2 eggs, beaten
1 c. white granulated sugar
2 tbsp. cooking oil or shortening
1 c. buttermilk
Preparation:
Heat 3 cups frying oil to 375 degrees F, check with thermometer -- use heavy skillet, pot or deep fryer. Be sure to use proper temperature. If fat is too hot, donuts will be raw in the middle. If too cold, they absorb too much fat.
Mix all ingredients together. Refrigerate 1 hour. Roll out dough on floured surface to about 1/2 inch thick. Cut into 2 or 3 inch squares or rounds -- poke a hole in the round center & pull open slightly -- use 2 finger tips. Save dough scraps for more donuts or to make holes if you used a cutter -- follow same method for frying. Drop several into hot oil -- use a slotted spoon. Cook until light golden brown about 2 min. Turn over with spoon. Take out and drain on a cookie rack over paper towels.
Can dip into powdered sugar while hot. When cooler, can roll in a mixture of cinnamon & granulated sugar or just sugar. A paper bag works well for this -- gently shake.
Can glaze donuts with thin mixture of 1 cup of powdered sugar & 3 tbsp. water or make white icing with powdered sugar, vanilla and milk -- add unsweetened cocoa for chocolate ones Use a pastry brush or hand dip or drizzle tops with a spoon or fork.
Ideas for decorating tops: Candy sprinkles or chips, coconut, jam, chopped nuts, sliced almonds, colored pitted cherry halves, crushed cookie crumbs (saved in freezer from bottom of cookie jar.) Dry on a cookie rack.

Icing and sprinkles really dress up the donuts and kids love to help out!

Use flavored icing or food coloring to vanilla icing for different colors & then sprinkle them with toppings! You're only limited by your imagination!
So cool Nettie!!! Thank you for sharing!
