What's On My Mind? Am I Obsessed with Facebook?

Have I Become Facebook Obsessive?

So, I wake up this morning and after my morning prayer, glass of juice, I sit down to my computer for at least a couple of hours of quiet before my workday starts. I immediately go to facebook.com to see what my friends are doing, check on my crops in FarmVille. and look on my fan page to see if I need to respond to any comments. And what happens? "Profile Unavailable due to Site Maintenance..." la de dah!

I say, "OK, no problem I'll check back in 30 minutes!" 30 minutes later and still the same error message, OK..... 1 hour and I'm wondering what is going on, 2 hours and my eyebrows began to raise up, 5 hours and I bang my desk with both fists, 6 hours I'm crying out loud!, 7 hours and smoke comes out my ears....now I'm ticked off!

I google to see if the site's down, it's not! I go on the help page to see if anyone else can't get in and all I found were angry people talking about the new home page look well... that's a different story! I ended up writing a complaint and I mean a complaint to some info email address. I won't hold my breath waiting for an answer! I even had my husband trying to find out what was going on and to make matters worse, none of my friends were having trouble! So Wassup?! I need MY FACEBOOK! And...then it suddenly hits me like a brick hitting my head...

I'm Addicted to Facebook!

You see I'm one of those who chose to tie all the social networks I use: Twitter, LinkedIn, Foodbuzz, Blogged, and of course Blogger into my Facebook profile and fan page. I got too overwhelmed with putting up a post, then put a link to it on Twitter, go over to Foodbuzz, then to LinkedIn, make sure Blogged got updated, etc., etc. Well somebody felt my pain and came up with little features to link all these networks together. Out of all these networks, I spend 90% of my time on Facebook. Why? Because I like the fact that I can do all my blogging, have a social calendar, send friends virtual gifts, and play games in one platform!

Facebook why are you down?

I like 1-stop shops, all-in-one printers, and so for me Facebook is one of those 1-stop-shops where you do your blogging, advertising, get back in touch with friends, play games, get reminded of birthdays and events, Twitter, share YouTube videos, links, etc., but when I realized that at 5 PM when I still couldn't log in that maybe I seriously my obsession must stop!

What do I do? Well, I tried to go on with my day, doing some blogging, write this article to vent my frustration (LOL), answer work email, and meet some deadlines but I can tell you my stomach was tied in knots wondering if I should try to log in again! The makers of Facebook ought to feel really proud of producing a platform that millions of people use and even when they make changes we don't like or feel need to be made, we complain but we still use FB! I think there's a lot of addictions going on other than just me!

So I guess the answer for me is get off the computer, hang out with friends or cook a delicious meal and watch an old movie and get back to in-person and real life interacting! Facebook will be around when I get back and perhaps this downtime is God's way of reminding me that other things are more important.

Moral of the story is: I had a life before Facebook ! Yeah...I do have a life!!!

Oh and don't forget to follow me on Facebook!! hee hee

  1. Well like you I do spend time there throughout the day to try and tie all the social networking into one place. I always feel it's my duty to post something interesting when I do and I hate people that post they walked the dog or washed the cat...Like why does anyone care about that? I love that I've reconnected with friends from 25 years ago but you are correct there was life before it. "Life is what happens to you when your busy making other plans" (Lennon)....or updating your Facebook page.

  2. hee hee...you made me giggle Kim!
Three times now I have deactivated my facebook account...only to activate it again weeks later. I use it for so many things, work, friends, family....and keep coming back every day to it! Addict? Me too! Every so often though I force myself to say "no, you are not going on there today"...and I don't...only to get back frantically the next morning to see what I missed, update fan pages, and send messages and play Cafe World! AHHHH!!!
    tee hee!
Oh well, I don't smoke, drink, do drugs, go out much, and my husband is out of town 26 days out of every month. I need a vice! and facebook is it! Dang those facebook people! :-)
